Fraction Operations

Addition & Subtraction

To add or subtract fractions:

  1. Find a common denominator
  2. Adjust numerators accordingly
  3. Add or subtract the numerators
  4. Simplify the result

Example: 1/4 + 1/2 = 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4

Multiplication & Division

Multiplication:

  • Multiply numerators together
  • Multiply denominators together
  • Simplify the result

Division:

  • Flip the second fraction (reciprocal)
  • Multiply as normal

Examples

  • Addition: 1/4 + 1/2 = 3/4
  • Subtraction: 3/4 − 1/2 = 1/4
  • Multiplication: 2/3 × 3/4 = 1/2
  • Division: 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 2
  • Mixed Numbers: 1 1/2 + 2 1/4 = 3 3/4
